How We Tested
We bought 14 of the best-selling filtered water bottles on Amazon from $13 plastic straw bottles to $100 press-style purifiers and lived with them.
We evaluated each one on:

The Nightmare Scenario
Most of what we tested did not survive.
Three bottles leaked badly enough that we stopped carrying them in a bag with anything we cared about. Two arrived with cracked or ill-fitting lids straight out of the box. Four were so hard to drink that testers simply stopped reaching for them; one described it as “sucking a milkshake through a coffee stirrer,” which is a fair summary of the category’s biggest design failure.
