Many women deal with unwanted facial hair — that soft peach fuzz, also known as vellus hair. Sometimes you don’t even notice it, but when the light hits your face a certain way, it suddenly becomes visible. It’s completely normal, but it can make your skin feel less smooth than you’d like.
That’s where dermaplaning tools come in. These devices claim to gently remove peach fuzz, exfoliate dead skin, and leave your face feeling smoother and brighter. But do they actually work?
So we picked up two of the most popular electric dermaplaning tools online and put them to the test. Let’s get into it.
If you’d like to see the video of us testing these razors, watch here:
First up is the Dermaflash Luxe+, which comes in at around $199 at the time of testing. This is a professional-grade sonic dermaplaning device designed to remove peach fuzz, dry flakes, and dead skin cells.
It uses patented Sonic Technology paired with a microfine edge for controlled exfoliation. It also includes an upgraded safety cage designed to help prevent nicks and cuts, making it more beginner-friendly.
The kit includes four single-use blades and a PREFLASH cleanser to prep your skin before treatment.
With its premium price tag, we wanted to see if the Dermaflash Luxe+ truly delivers smoother, brighter skin — or if it’s just marketing.
Next is the Sonicsmooth by Michael Todd Beauty, priced around $91.96 at the time of testing.
This device claims to remove facial hair, exfoliate dead skin, and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
It features three adjustable speed settings, allowing you to customize the intensity based on comfort and skin sensitivity. It also comes with eight single-use stainless steel safety blades for controlled use.
Sonicsmooth promises strong results — so we put that claim to the test.
The Test — Split Face Comparison
To make this fair, we did a split-face test using both tools.
Caity joined me for the test. She had dermaplaned before using manual razors, but never electric ones. Interestingly, she actually felt these electric tools might be safer due to their built-in safety protection — so we tested that theory.
We used:
Sonicsmooth on the left side
Dermaflash Luxe+ on the right side
Then compared results.
Sonicsmooth Results
Caity’s first reaction was that the blade felt smooth and safe as it moved across her skin. After a few passes, we started seeing small clumps of peach fuzz coming off.
She tested all three speed settings — from low to high.
After checking her skin, she said her face felt smoother, but some fuzz was still noticeable even after using the highest setting.
Score: 3.5 / 5
Dermaflash Luxe+ Results
When testing the Dermaflash Luxe+, Caity immediately noticed how lightly the blade touched her skin. Unlike the Sonicsmooth, which felt similar to a manual razor, the Dermaflash felt like it was gliding.
At first, it almost felt like it wasn’t catching hairs — but once she checked her skin, the difference was clear.
Her face felt noticeably smoother, even using only the first setting.
Although the device felt slightly heavier, it was still comfortable to hold and easy to control.
Final Verdict — Which Dermaplaning Tool Won?
When asked which device performed better, Caity chose the Dermaflash Luxe+. While it was slightly bigger and heavier, it delivered:
Smoother skin
Better peach fuzz removal
A gentler glide across the face
Stronger overall results
The Sonicsmooth still performed well, especially for its price, but it left behind more fuzz compared to the Dermaflash.
Final Thoughts
Both devices improved skin smoothness and removed facial hair — but the Dermaflash Luxe+ delivered the best overall results in this test.
If you’re looking for a premium dermaplaning experience with smoother results, Dermaflash may be worth the investment. But if you want a more affordable option that still works, Sonicsmooth is still a solid choice.
